Backups & Recovery Guide
Protecting your data is one of the most critical aspects of managing any online service. A reliable backup strategy is your safety net against data loss from hardware failure, human error, or malicious attacks. This guide explains the backup and recovery options available for different Simbavault services.
For Shared Hosting
Our Shared Hosting plans include automated daily backups with a 7-day retention period. You can easily manage these backups through the JetBackup tool in your cPanel control panel.
- Log in to your cPanel account.
- Go to the "JetBackup 5" section.
- From here, you can perform several types of restores:
- Full Account Backups: Download or restore a full snapshot of your account.
- File Backups: Browse and restore individual files or folders to a specific date.
- Database Backups: Restore a MySQL database to a previous state.
For Virtual Private Servers (VPS)
VPS users have more direct control and responsibility for their backup strategy. We provide the snapshot tool as a basic, manual backup mechanism.
On-Demand Snapshots
A snapshot is a point-in-time, full-disk image of your server. It's perfect for taking a manual backup before performing a major software upgrade or system configuration change.
- To Create: In your VPS management panel, go to the "Snapshots" tab and click "Create Snapshot".
- To Restore: Select a snapshot and click "Restore". This is a bare-metal restore; it will revert your entire server to the state it was in when the snapshot was taken.
Warning: All changes made since the snapshot will be permanently lost.
For automated, policy-based backups, we highly recommend our dedicated Backup service.
Backup and Disaster Recovery
These are two separate managed services. Backup gets your data back; disaster recovery gets your business running again while your own systems are repaired.
- Backup: Every version of every file, every day, in locked copies that cannot be altered or deleted. You set the schedule and retention per system (for example, daily copies for 30 days and weekly copies for 12 weeks), and you can restore a single file without restoring the whole server.
- Disaster Recovery: A standby copy of your critical systems, ready to start, with a written runbook and recovery targets agreed in your contract. We rehearse the failover on a schedule and give you the measured result. Every disaster recovery arrangement includes backup.
How to Request a File-Level Restore
If you subscribe to our Secure Backup service and need to restore a specific file or folder, you don't need to restore the entire server. Simply raise a support ticket with the following information:
- Server Name/IP: The server from which the data needs to be restored.
- File/Folder Path: The full path to the file(s) or folder(s) you need (e.g.,
/var/www/html/index.html). - Restore Point: The date and approximate time from which you'd like to restore the data.
Our support team will promptly retrieve the data from the backup repository and provide it to you securely.
